The Tabla beginner’s course under the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya is designed for students who are starting their journey of learning the tabla. This course focuses on fundamental knowledge and techniques to provide students with a strong foundation. Below are the main topics of this course and their descriptions:
1. Understanding the Components and Structure of the Tabla
Introduction to Tabla and Bayan:
Names and roles of parts of the tabla (right drum) and bayan (left drum).
Materials and their structure, such as wooden tabla, metal, or clay bayan.
Proper Tabla Setup:
Understanding the position and height of the tabla.
Using a cushion or ring to stabilize the tabla.
2. Understanding Tabla Sounds and Bol
Basic Bol (Syllables):
Practicing initial bols like “Dha,” “Tin,” “Ta,” “Na,” “The,” “Ke.”
Correct Finger Usage:
Positioning and striking technique for each bol.
Recognizing Rhythm (Taal):
Introduction to simple rhythms and taals like “Teentaal” and “Jhaptal.”
Practice dividing 16 beats and understanding “Sam.”
3. Practice of Simple Kayda and Paran
Simple Taal Playing:
Playing Teentaal at a slow pace.
Aligning each bol correctly with the beat.
Basic Kayda:
Learning simple kaydas like “Dha Tin Tin Ta, Ta Tin Tin Dha.”
Practicing with patience and rhythm.
4. Practical Knowledge and Practice Habits
Proper Practice Techniques:
Setting a daily practice routine.
Starting with slow-paced practice and gradually increasing speed.
Pitch Recognition:
Tuning the tabla and practicing to produce the correct pitch.
